Tate Britain (the new name of the old Tate Gallery to distinguish it from Tate Modern opposite St Paul's)) is the national gallery of British art from 1500 to the present day. The gallery holds the greatest collection of British artists in the world including works by Blake, Constable, Gainsborough, Hockney, Hogarth, Stubbs and Turner.
The controversial Turner Prize is the country's most prestigious modern art prize. Works of the four short-listed artists are displayed for a few weeks before the prize-giving and have prompted virulent comment about the artistic merit of the awards.
The gallery shows British art in a dynamic series of thematic special displays and exhibitions. Historic and modern works hang together in challenging juxtaposition, drawing out new meanings from famous and familiar images.
