Museum of London

The MUSEUM of LONDON tells the story of London and its people from prehistoric times to today. The museum displays Roman relics, models of medieval London - much of medieval London was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1666, the Blitz and postwar development - reconstructed Victorian pubs, shops and offices.

Other displays show how Londoners lived and worked during the dark and difficult years from 1939-1945; a reconstructed 1760 prison - the death penalty was enforced for crimes such as arson, forgery and maiming of cattle; the death mask of the regicide, Oliver Cromwell; and the Suffragette's Movement which campaigned for the right of women to vote.

A new gallery will be opened in December 2001 named the World City illustrating one of the richest periods in London's history, from 1789 to 1914.

There are also excellent temporary exhibitions organised through the year.
