Cutty Sark
CUTTY SARK is the world's last surviving tea clipper. Built in 1869 she sailed between
England and China for 8 years before converting to the Australian wool trade. Speed of
delivery was just as important in the 19th century as it is today and the captains of
clippers were in bitter competition to be the first to return to port after the tea was
harvested.
Wooden ships were often decorated by figureheads on the prow. On this ship it portrays 'Nannie' clutching the tail of a drunken farmer's horse. She's wearing a short linen dress, commonly called a 'cutty sark' in 18th century Scotland.
